A major traffic disruption occurred late last night after a truck collided with the overhead structure of Patipukur underpass, causing it to collapse. The incident, which happened around 11:30 PM, led to a long traffic jam, trapping several vehicles, including a goods-laden lorry. The Kolkata Traffic Police and Laketown Traffic Guard Police swiftly responded to the situation and worked to restore normalcy.
According to police sources, the truck, which was traveling from Kolkata towards Laketown, got stuck under the low-clearance structure of the underpass. Due to the impact, the overhead portion collapsed, blocking the movement of vehicles. As congestion built up, emergency services were called to the spot to manage the situation and clear the debris.
A crane was brought in to remove the damaged overhead structure and free the trapped vehicles. Authorities took over an hour to fully restore traffic flow. Meanwhile, police began investigating whether the truck was overloaded or if it had exceeded the permissible height limit for the underpass.
Following the accident, the police seized the truck and registered a case. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may not have followed clearance restrictions. Officials are also looking into whether the signage around the underpass was adequate to prevent such incidents.
Traffic movement between Kolkata and Laketown remained disrupted for some time but was gradually restored after the overhead was removed. Commuters faced delays, and alternative routes were used to ease congestion. The authorities have urged transporters to ensure that trucks comply with height restrictions to prevent similar accidents.
